Sweet, spicy make nice at fruterķas

Along with margaritas and tacos, fresh fruit topped with chile powder, lime juice and salt may be one of San Antonio's tastiest imports from Mexico.

On a steamy summer afternoon, a cup brimming with watermelon, pineapple and other juicy fruits from a fruterķa offers all the chilly sweetness of ice cream, without the fat.

"The sun comes out, and we have lines," says Adrianna Gonzalez, who owns Los Cocos Fruteria y Taqueria, 1502 Bandera Road, with her husband Carlos. "People are always looking for something cool and refreshing."
