Graffiti has long been a problem on the large blank wall of the INSCO building near the Blue Star Arts Complex, so the King William Neighborhood Association thought a mural might solve the problem. They called artist Jane Madrigal, who has worked with San Anto Cultural Arts. "Of course, I'm a Chicana artist, so all my projects have dealt with Mexican and Chicano history, but that didn't really go with King William," Madrigal said. "We had a lot of meetings with the community and city leaders, and there was a lot of politics involved, but I think the mural turned out great," she said. "We featured several of the historic homes and buildings in the area, such as the Pioneer Flour Mill and the Walter Mathis house." With a calming palette of mostly blue and green, the mural reflects the Victorian architecture and well-kept lawns of the old historic neighborhood. "This wall was always being tagged, especially after a First Friday," Madrigal said. "I can't guarantee that taggers won't mark it, but we are applying a sealant that should make it easier to clean off. Generally, taggers respect the work of artists and won't deface murals, so let's hope it works."
